Veneered Walls – A New Look for Retaining Walls

For the past 20 years, the big push for retaining walls, seatwalls, planters etc. has been concrete block systems. For good reason, these walls are extremely sturdy, easy to work with, and cost effective. And in most residential and commercial applications, these walls provide a perfect solution to a variety of grade issues. But the one drawback is that most of the concrete block systems look very similar and lack a personality or style that some people seek out. But as with all products, individuality comes with a slightly higher price tag. We would like to introduce you to a variety of interesting wall options that you may or may not have seen before so that you are aware of your options and can pick a material suitable for your outdoor project.

Veneered walls can be used just about anywhere. They can be used in tight spaces where there is not enough room for a full sized stone. Veneers can also be used on decks or spaces where adding a lot of additional weight is a concern. They can be applied on existing concrete or wood structures fairly easily.

Natural Stone Veneer: Natural Stone veneers are made from real quarried stone. The stone is cut to a consistent thickness for use as a veneer. The Veneer is basically a decorative covering for walls. There are many options to choose from. Each type of stone has a different color, pattern and style to compliment any home or site condition.

Manufactured or Cultured Stone Veneer: Cultured Stone is a manufactured stone veneer that is used to replicate the look of natural stone. It is fabricated by pouring a lightweight concrete mix into rubber forms of different styles and then painted with a coloring process that resembles real stone. Again, there are many styles to choose from.

Brick Veneer: Bricks can also be used as a veneer to cover a wall to match a house or driveway.

All of the above veneers require a concrete wall structure to be veneered to. A concrete wall requires a concrete footing dug down to the frost-line, 42” in depth. The above grade portion of the wall can be formedconcrete or cinder blocks. The veneer is then “glued” to the wall with stoneset or mortar.
